CAL FOOTE SELECTED ROUND 1, #14 OVERALL, IN 2017 NHL DRAFT!

ROUND 1, #14 OVERALL
IN 2017 NHL DRAFT!

 

The Colorado Thunderbirds are proud of Cal Foote, former Colorado Thunderbirds defenseman, who was selected in the first round of the NHL draft, #14 overall, by Tampa Bay Lightning.  Foote's draft selection brings the total Thunderbirds players drafted in the NHL to 17 since 2008!  Colorado Thunderbirds are excited that their players continue to have excellent opportunities and to benefit from the elite training received in the Thunderbirds organization. 

 

Cal Foote played Colorado Thunderbirds from 2009-2015 and was Captain of the 2014-2015 Thunderbirds 16U Team that placed 3rd in the nation.  Foote played the last 2 seasons for the Kelowna Rockets.  Last season was special for the Foote family as Cal's younger brother, Nolan, was also on the team.  Cal is the son of proud parents, Jenn and Adam Foote.  Cal is following in his father, Adam's, footsteps as Adam is a 20-year NHL defense veteran, who was selected in the second round, #22 overall, in the 1989 NHL draft by Quebec.

  • Troy Terry, a forward, drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the 5th round, #148 overall in 2015

  • Evan Smith, a goalie, drafted by Nashville Predators in the 7th round, #205 overall in 2015

  • Gustav Olofsson, a defenseman, drafted by Minnesota Wild in the 2nd Round, 46th overall in 2013
  • Quentin Shore, a center, drafted in the 6th Round, 168th overall by Ottawa Senators in 2013
  • Jaccob Slavin, a defenseman, drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 4th round, 120th overall in 2012
  • Nick Shore, a forward, drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 3rd round, 82nd overall in 2011
  • Josiah Didier, a defenseman, drafted by the Montreal Canadians in the 4th round, 97th overall in 2011
  • Sean Lorenz, a defenseman, drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the 4th round, 115th overall in 2008

Colorado Thunderbirds is looking forward to the 2017 NHL Draft this Friday, June 23, and very excited that former Thunderbirds defenseman, Cal Foote, is predicted to be selected in the 1st Round!  Cal Foote played Colorado Thunderbirds from 2009-2015 and was Captain of the 2014-2015 Thunderbirds 16U Team that placed 3rd in the nation.  Foote played the last 2 seasons for the Kelowna Rockets.  Last season was special to the Foote family as Cal’s younger brother, Nolan, was also on the team.  Cal is the son of proud parents, former NHL defenseman, Adam, and Jenn Foote.  

 

Colorado Thunderbirds wish Cal Foote the best of luck at the NHL Draft as he is hoping to join the list of Colorado Thunderbirds alums currently playing in the NHL:  

  • Seth Jones, Columbus Blue Jackets
  • Jaccob Slavin, Carolina Hurricanes
  • Gustav Olofsson, Minnesota Wild
  • Brandon Carlo, Boston Bruins.

 

All of these former Colorado Thunderbirds currently playing in the NHL played for Coach Angelo Ricci who is Thunderbirds Director, 16U Head Coach, and NHL Skills Coach, and has a proven history of moving players on to the next level.  Coach Ricci feels that “Cal has the potential to be right up there with all of those players [playing in the NHL],”  and says that Cal Foote, “has a great stick, defends well, makes a terrific first pass.  In my opinion, his greatest attribute is his hockey brain.  His understanding and feel for the game is pretty special.”  

 

Best of luck to Cal Foote and his family at the 2017 NHL Draft.  We look forward to following his continuing hockey career!

MASON MANNEK,
SIGNS WITH WHL PORTLAND WINTERHAWKS!

 

Exciting news as Colorado Thunderbirds, Mason Mannek, 2000 forward and Captain on the Thunderbirds 16U Team this past 2016-2017 season, signed with the WHL Portland Winterhawks. Mannek will be in good company on the Portland Team as he joins Colorado Thunderbirds alumni, Dominic Turgeon who played Thunderbirds from 2008-2012, Alex Overheard who played Thunderbirds from 2009-2014, and Jake Gricius who played Thunderbirds from 2010-2011 and 2014-2016.  Mason Mannek played Colorado Thunderbirds 2014-2017 and is the son of proud parents Brandon and Sharmin Mannek from Herriman, Utah.  

 

Congratulations to Mason! Colorado Thunderbirds wish him the best of luck with Portland Winterhawks and look forward to following his continuing hockey adventures.
